I felt the need that I should leave once I heard by myself you are speaking the m--words.
Senior folks: do you mind if APs are often not in office?

Never understood why senior people would want junior people+phd to stay in the office. It is not helpful to enhance productivity at all. Nothing but noises and disturbance.
if you are not in office, your colleague will spread a rumour that you are not working hard

You should be able to figure out if you are at a place where working mostly from home is Ok. I am in a very collegial department where most people work almost exclusively from home on non-teaching days. The university is not in a good part of town, so most people live fairly far away. We all communicate daily via email, and if something comes up that is done more efficiently in person, we setup a meeting somewhere that is most convenient (which is rarely the university). Eceryone seems to enjoy this setup.
