I got a theory PhD from a ULRM (something like world top 250). Now I have an academic job doing theory, very little teaching, and multiple top field pubs. Theory is still valued outside of the US because the cutenomics cabal hasn't taken over here. If you can be happy outside the US and are good, there is a way to make it as a theorist.Top 250, lol.

Btw, had anyone applied to us straight out of grad school with a top field, even if they do theory, they'd have gotten at least a flyout. And we pay $100k+ with a 2-1 teaching load.

Don't make the same mistake I did. There are very few positions (about 20 this year) for theory candidates and most of them are filled by candidates from top 10 schools. Remember you are also competing with postdocs and under placed AP in the market. People I know from top 20/30 schools with top field journals only got 3-5 US interviews. Most of us didn't get any academic offer.
Theory JMCs, think thoroughly before taking a postdoc position. The theory market is only going to get worse.
