   -GS just bumped all base IB salaries. 110k ex bonus straight out of undergrad
   -High finance (IB, PE, HF, VC, etc.) salaries are going through the roof
   -Software engineers making absolute bank. You can make >600k TC with just 5 years of experience. Never before has it been this accessible to accumulate wealth at such a rate
   -Thriving venture capital industry and new services like Shopify, Instagram, YouTube make starting your own business far more viable than ever before
   -Nobody really cares about your pubs
   -Rampant corruption, fraud, and politics pervades academia
   -I can think of many more reasons but I will restrain myself in the interest of brevity. Feel free to add your reasons in the comments.

   There was a time when academia was the place to be. Now is not that time. I wrote this post to warn you. If you're not already in academia, from the deepest corner of my heart, I urge you to consider other options.

    This will happen. Certain stuff was parody 10 years ago and is now reality or even surpassed by the current lyb behavior.

    Since Econ was already self-referential and ameri-centric, my hope is that this turn into w0kenism (both as content and as choice of who can publish) becomes the last straw and departments outside the US finally stops caring about the US, their w0ke universities, their w0ke scholars, their w0ke publications, and their w0ke rankings thereof. Practically, a sundering in the profession.

    I truly believe that we must install AFFIRMATIVE ACTION when accepting papers for publication.
    We must be more inclusive and have more papers by BIPOC and URM published in all levels, including in QJE, AER, JF, RFS, ManSci etc etc.

    -Data scientists earn less than SWEs
    -600k is obviously for Tier 1 companies like Google, Facebook, Apple, Amazon etc.
    -Look at Google stock price. Doubled in 1 year. Other tech giants have similar gains. SWEs get stock bonus, restricted stock units and stock refreshers so they benefit immensely from stock appreciation

    I am assuming you have a PhD role?

    I'm mainly talking about standard high finance trajectory
    Target School or non-Target with networking -> BB or boutique IB -> After 2 years or so of experience jump to buy-side or stay in current field and do (optiona) MBA in a few years

    There are two different parts to your post.

    The financial part and the culture wars part.

    On the financial part, you are correct, you do not go to academia to make money.

    On the culture wars part I'm afraid you spent too much time on the Internet. You have a freedom to do, think, and communicate in academia that you will not find anywhere else.
