SG's CV also seems to list research grants for papers on which he is not a co-author - specifically, Casaburi and Willis: Time v/s state in insurance.
How does that happen?
Seventh years
-
So 7 years PhD plus two postdoc plus 6 years for tenure: that is 15 years of someone at the peak of their intellectual lifecycle wasted producing followups of their advisor's thesis, and praying and hoping that they get a top 5.
At what stage does a smart person conclude that it simply isn't worth it (esp. if you are not in the holy zipcode)Don't forget the extra time to switch schools before tenure to extend your clock, esp for people at certain top schools that tenure nobody

I just realized that one of the Yale finance candidates is also a 7th year. No wonder the candidates from my MRM school are doing so poorly. We kick them out after 5 years, and now they are competing against 7th-year students...
I see one Yale finance JMC who was a full time RA until 2014, one who worked full time until 2013, and one who was an RA at HBS for 2.5 years, ending in December 2012.
Is the third one the seventh year, meaning he started his PhD in Fall 2012? His MA is listed as 2016, so I would not have realized seventh year at all.

What about George from Harvard, also a hidden seventh year who claims to be sixth on his website. He's development but doesn't do any experiment.
SG took a year of official leave from the program to work in India in a policy job full time, not doing research. He separately had a brain tumor while in his PhD and was out for quite a long time with surgery. He is a wonderful person and a solid researcher and has been entirely honest.
EJMR really sucks.

To those morons of you claiming 7th year is lemon signal, what do you have to say about different levels of preparation entering PhD programs? How can you expect the median student who enters fresh out of undergrad to produce the same results as the median student entering with a MA (which basically is the first two years of PhD program nowadays) plus RA work? But of course since this is something "the market" is used to ignoring, your tiny brains complete short-circuit around it.

Yeah exactly, RA work, MAs and even second PhDs in which students did relevant work put traditional students at a huge disadvantage

how does your tiny brain work to admit undergreads to phd program?

EJMR really sucks.Where is the apology from the anonymous posters who spoke ill of him without any evidence? It appears ejmr can only damn but not correct itself when evidence appears. One of the many bad traits engendered by anonymity.

This is insane. I can stay in grad school for 10 yrs. I can put my name on my advisors papers by providing cheap labor. Are we looking for janitors that can clean the floor with their brains? there must be a cap on the number of years you can stay in grad school. It should be around 7 years if you do not have any excuse.

The reason is because his letters were not forthcoming about such scenarios. Instead he publicly announces that he's a sixth year which isn't really accurate. A sincere explanation is definitely fine.

You really don't get it. He is OFFICIALLY A 6TH year. He took a year off doing something completely unrelated.
SG is a great research and a great person. -
You can't imagine how pathetic it sounds from an outside perspective that some spend 7 years doing a PhD after 4 yrs of ugrad and 12 of basic schooling.
The output of this? A thesis with zero uses and a lack of understanding of the real world. Some in the best case manage to keep doing useless stuff within central banks and universities.

The school needs to be taken into account. Right now, at Chicago, zero fifth years are on the academic market (out of an incoming class of ~40). I don't know why, but 6/7 years here has just become normal.
It's normal because 1/2 extra years improve a lot the JMP, and there is no weighting on the market on how many years you needed. Very inefficient equilibrium.
