What makes them a particularly attractive pool is that an exceptionally high fraction of cross admits to iran's top universities choose sharif over other schools. This is rarely the case in other countries where there are multiple top schools, fairly equally attractive to top talent. So, it's not that iranian students are better than others. It's just that with iran you have an easier way to identify the best ones.
That said, it's an engineering school and most of the students have a STEM mindset about research. They join the phd program expecting their advisors to give them ideas to work on. This was the biggest problem with the ones we admitted to our program. Some succeeded in adapting and did well and some struggled with research in spite of their good (sometimes stellar) performances on exams.

Yes, exactly. If you give them a task they are the best to do it, nut I am not sure how creative they are in making ideas.

Thank you for the objective analysis

Hey OP,
I've been there and it's a good school. Very competitive to get there. Its reputation comes from the fact that in every cohort of 1000 there are a few dozen really really smart kids. Think international Olympiads medalists. These kids would be unbeatable but the rest of the school feeds off their reputation. Nevertheless they are smart and/or hardworking in order to keep up with the level of the unbeatables.that's all cool but do they take showers?

Admission to universities in iran is through a competitive national exam which takes place in one day in the whole country.
From high school on, kids decide which track to take: maths and physics, biology and humanities.
Each track has a separate national entrance exam and they are ranked within each track.
Allocation starts from placing the top rank in each track wherever they want to go and goes down the order. Most math kids go to engineering schools but not all. Top schools are sharif, tehran u, amirkabir and then other public unis in tehran. Top fields are electrical eng., Computer eng., Mechanical and somewhat civil.
Smart biology track kids do medicine in tehran U and Beheshti U.
Smart humanities kids do law in tehran U, beheshti U and Allameh U.
Admission to econ undergrad could be from any of the tracks. Top schools with decent econ education are Tehran U, Allameh U and Beheshti U. But econ is not very popular in general so rarely attracts talent.
Public schools are generally better. Schools in big cities (Tehran, Isfahan, shiraz, tabriz, mashhad) are better.
