I am a China bro who is studying at a low ranking university in US for my PhD in Finance; will graduate next year... Mom told me to go back to China since I am the only child and she thinks it’s better to stay close with her and my father....Father is a businessman with net worth between 10m-20m USD (I don’t know exact number, never asked him).... Should I work hard to find an academic job in US (focus on research) or go back to China and do business (while also teaching at a university) with my parents’ support?? Any opinions will be appreciated!
Should I work in academia or go to industry ?

Listen to me. Go back to China. Learn from your father. The guy knows how to make money. That skill is 100X more useful than your bs finance degree. Since you are his son, he'll take you under his wing, and he'll ignore your faults. Learn everything he knows. You have the opportunity for some real dynastic wealth. Don't blow it.

I would go back. I am not a Chinese but I know that money your father is making is a great money in your country. If my father had that kind of business in my home country, I would never work as a finance faculty in US. If you become a finance professor, students are your customers these days. University is becoming a service industry. You are blessed to have a that father.

You didn't tell us how much you love research so I will assume it's around the median level in this profession. If that's the case, don't waste your time writing bs papers for $200k/year. Go to industry to learn things useful for your own future business, or go back China for better life.

In 20 years you are either going to want to find this man and thank him with every fibre of your being, or you'll spend every morning staring into the shower head wishing you'd listened to him.

He could've just been some lucky or corrupt S.O.B. in which case its hard to replicate in another generation
But yeah good plan imo, that's too much money waiting to be inherited to just be grinding all your life for useless academia points, unless you want to and that's your mission in life to further your research -
I am an India bro who was studying at an HRM finance PhD program in the West. Finance phd is utter crap intellectually. It is essentially data driven journalism. If I had a family that had 10m plus net worth I would move back to india in a heartbeat and live like a king. In china india you can have drivers, maidservants, amazing cheap delivery food...A royal lifestyle which you will never get abroad.
The only reason to live outside china for you would be if you don't like CCP or are scared of it. I heard many rich chinese keep their assets overseas from fear of being confiscated by CCP.
That , and hookers.

I hope you don't make it if that's how you want to live Indiabro -
Suppose you earn $1k in rent each month for every $250K you own of rental property. That's $40k per month or half a million per year if you buy 10m worth of properties. You can vacation every single day with that kind of money and still have a ton of rental income left over. So if you must work, it better be something you enjoy doing. Hence stay in academia.
Honest answer: stay in academia and invest the money in rental properties and the stock market so you can collect passive income on the $10-$20m until you die.

lol data driven journalism.
But in defense of fin academics, they do pretend to have theories and frameworks, which is a big step up from wsj.I am an India bro who was studying at an HRM finance PhD program in the West. Yep. Look at the English aristocracy.
Having money, or family money, means you have the freedom to pursue your interests. If you want to be a finance academic, then do that. People with money usually pursue something more interesting like math or physics instead of something pr//ol/e like fenance.
