Is this really true? In literature, it's the lowbrow stuff that is focussed on plot, i.e. events. Who will die? Who is the culprit? Will the chosen one defeat the villain? More sophisticated literature is fixated on describing characters in detail and less on plot. It doesn't really matter whether Mrs. Dalloway gets her flowers, what interests readers is the elaborate description of her inner world.
Small minds discuss people, average minds discuss events?

The saying is meant to refer to shallow gossip.
Low tier: Have you seen Louise today? Her dress is so ugly.
Mid tier: Wow, they're starting construction on Main street again?! They just repaved it two years ago!
Upper tier: I've noticed that melodies tend to be constructed differently for songs in 3/4 timing, and I have a theory about that.

You read Animal Farm in 3rd grade to cheer on Major and attack Napoleon for being a meanie and control freak. It's like a messed up version of Charlotte's Web.
You read Animal Farm in 7th grade to understand totalitarianism and 20th century Stalinist dictatorships.
Ideas > events > people

Galaxy brain: a discourse on Louise's dress in relation to Dürer's artwork, and why this reveals she is a tacky byotch
It is amazing how this place has so many scholarly people who probably cannot even talk to others normally in real life.
bro are you really not aware that academics are maladjusted, one-dimensional biotrash whose lone skill obsequious test-taking? there’s a reason they tapped out of being around normal people in the real world

Anyone who prefers fiction over nonfiction is low IQ.

I'm not sure IQ and sophistication are highly correlated; STEM types tend to like plot-oriented science fiction and fantasy. If IQ were any guide to artistic merit, A Song of Ice and Fire would be superior to War and Peace. I would agree that a high IQ helps one appreciate sophisticated literature, but some sort of acculturation process is necessary, and in our society this happens essentially at random.

4157 has no knowledge of what academia is like beyond some scantron-dominant low-quality directional state university or community college.
Test-taking ability has very little correlation to the skills you need to a) finish the dissertation and b) get a job/get tenure in academia. Plenty of people who scored high on the GRE and did well in classes are unable to write a dissertation.

Being 1D applies more to corporate careerists than academics. Your average ML or software guy knows only about the latest update to some shitty ML tool or a new Leetcode hard problem. They know nothing about history, economics, philosophy, literature or the natural sciences. This is really not the case in academia atleast in physics, mathematics and economics. These three groups can be really cultured.Gell Mann read Finnegan's Wake for instance.
