   I would even remove my name and leave you as solo-authored of any AER paper for much, much less than that. But this is not the point here. I would be happy to do that transaction (and though we would be lying to the readership of AER, and many others about who wrote the piece), I can cope with that while travelling my own private jet around the world, enjoying the longest holiday of my life. I doubt this is the case here.

   General question: would it be ok to ask to be added as a co-author for a payment of let's say 1.5 billion?

   There's nothing criminal here and you can see that HS is very careful not to use the word threat. There is professional misconduct, but not to an extent that will warrant further action, I think. What HS is saying, is that they asked to be included as coauthors and they agreed.

   you're thick, he's saying exactly that they've been threatened.

   rarely seen such a clear and strong statement as HS, there's no ambiguity.

   For the sake of logic, I was one of those pushing the possibility of another side in the other thread. But i agree now, this is a rather uncontroversial case.

   I do not think there is ground for legal consequences. But it is very sad indeed that two people so close to the top of the game behaved like that. What for? Even if you do not get an AER, you can still quit LSE and get a nice job elsewhere in UK or Europe. Not to mention a junior coming back from Stanford - he could have got a job almost anywhere. Really difficult to understand these people.

   PS and SS believe that OT and HS hijacked part of the idea of SSS. SSS was initiated in 2008, before OT and HS started in 2010

    This is reaching NY Times level drama...I'm quite surprised to see HS throw PS and SS under the bus. I'd love to see those two be held to account, though I'm not holding my breath. Anyone refereeing a paper by either of them, at least, should raise concerns about whether they actually made a contribution or just bullied their coauthors into agreeing to add their names.

    Too bad neither of them are presenting at the AEA's this year...that could be fun!

    Different from PP and MRS. In that case there was a middle-ground remedy: the now famous post-acceptance note. Hard to see what that would be here -- a note indicating that two of the authors made no contribution?

    while the PP/MRS case was bad as well, this case here is just way worse. there's a difference between extortion and downplaying previous work.

    But Stephan Seiler (Stanford) and Pasquale Schiraldi (LSE) remember:
