No. Nothing justifies the email threats. It is clear the SS and PS were wrong. What I’m saying here is that Smith was also wrong.
HS is a very nice guy. It takes something else however to manage conflict, in particular with bullies. Plus, he is not a superstar either, he had 1 top 5 in the early 2000's and one now. And very few other papers. So yes, the AER mattered to him, and he would also have been victim of retaliation by the better connected juniors.
I'm not defending him, he clearly messed up. But I think I understand how it could have happened.

In a less structured society, that kind of bad boys is able to survive and protect their families. Nothing surprising that women are attracted to them. Pure genetics.
