ef7b here. Will assume you are not trolling so will answer sincerely. I am from the rural mid-west. People there are not lonely because they have family and long-standing friendships from childhood. But if you aren't from there social networks are pretty locked up. So you are pretty dependent on the campus community for a social life, especially at first.
Not very good if then the campus also bans dating, right?
I agree students and faculty should be free to date. I dated a young AP when I was an undergrad and it was fine - I mean who else are they going to find to date in a rural college town?
Grad students and faculty in the same department I think is a trickier case. Kind of like if you fall in love with one of your employees -- you had better be darn sure of a positive answer before you make a move and one of you had better find another job before you let the cat out of the bag.
