The idea behind giving professors lifetime tenure is that this will enable them to speak out freely. But it would be hard to name any other occupation with a more cowardly record than academics, who have been giving in to politically correct campus bullies ever since the 1960s.
Sowell on the cowardice of tenured academics

Tenure entitles you to due process, rather than being an at-will employee. In some states, it protects you a bit more, but nowhere does it protect you from all sorts of ways that administrators can make your life unpleasant.
Go to it if you want to speak out, I’m fine blending in unnoticed. Tenure is just about low risk cash flow for me. Maybe Sowell should learn about risk-reward trade offs.

Tenure absolutely protects you at public universities and most privates that commit to free expression in the faculty manual. That some online mob can get your job is a myth unis want you to believe. Look at ER, HU, and many others. People raged for a few days, the unis ignored it, and nothing much happened. GB is another example, although the issues were different.

HU was fired from the Fed if it wasn’t Chicago, he would have lost his job, too.

HU wouldn't have lost his job anywhere. It would be illegal at any public institution and ditto for any private institution that blessed freedom of expression in their faculty manual. Maybe at some out of the way place that doesn't mention freedom of expression in their manual. No R1 would have canned him.

https://twitter.com/ThomasSowell/status/1485328877115396105So true. I remember how sickening it was to listen to my PhD adviser's political views and how afraid he was of what students thought about him. The kind of dude who would call everyone to the right of George W Bush a 'nahtsee'.

The idea behind tenure *NOW* is academic freedom. But the idea in the late 19th century when it was adopted, was to protect academics from unqualified crony appointments of the dean's or president's friends into cushy jobs. Since these hacks could not pass academic muster, they got fired when they went up for tenure.

How many deans have tried to get rid of you for not caring for your research area? Not your productivity, just the area you publish in? Until that number hits three, you’re the parasite by lobbing nonsense.
