That's part of the reason that the CPC and even Chinese emperors before, spent so much effort in trying to rule over all these separate groups and sub-kingdoms. There's actually nothing that brings together all of mainland China together from either an ethnic, linguistic, religous, or historical perspective.
That's why if Tibet or Taiwan or HK should wriggle themselves free, Beijing knows it's just the first domino to fall. Only a matter of time before "China" splinters into 20-30 separate countries -- which is how probably it should be.
I don't mind the coexistence of ROC with PRC in UN, WHO,..., nor even ROC changes its name to Taiwan.

TW people had to went through that and the following dictatorship of the ROC regime (run by the KMT) that assassinated, executed, and jailed so many TW people that tried to fight for democracy. So before you throw the "ROC brought TW riches" crap at me, read more history.
True that a lot of TW people's ancestors and culture came from mainland China. So did they got a lot through Japanese, Spanish, and Dutch rule. The US is a mix of English, European, Asian, and many other ethnic groups. Would they call themselves British?
