I've never had to give an F before.
This time, there's a student who has a 47% score (bombed all the exams, though shows a slight improvement in the final). Class median was around 88%. Student attended class regularly, had a private tutor, clearly worked hard, but nothing seemed to sink in. Was encouraged to drop the course, but refused to do so.
Complicating factors: is Hispanic, has a single mother, is from a very bad school system relative to the other students, first semester in college. Also, in our school, first semester grades are shown as pass/fail, so a D is indistinguishable from an A.
What would you do?
