Just use the DEI nonsense as an excuse to get more slots. Sociology already has “gender balance” (i.e. massive majority women), so every year after you have your number of slots, bargain for an additional slot to be earmarked for a woman. Then you have an additional slot. If you had one slot before, you hire the best candidate (man or woman), plus the best other woman (who is still great).
Get over yourself, and optimize within the existing system.

Oh boy, these sort of "worries" that the cowards here have about DEI aparatchiks retaliation make me think that the "worried" cowards are DEI hires themselves.
You get fired: Big deal, you take them to court, you try to get some cash off their crimes, you find another job. What is the biggie?
They move you to the basement, or they move you to a shared "agile" working space? You do not go to uni that much anymore, or not at all for that matter. You cancel office hours, you cancer meetings because of lack of space, and that is it. What is the biggie?"Finding another job" with a phd in econ, even without any baggage along the lines of this thread, is almost guaranteed to mean taking a pay cut and moving across the country or to another country. If we get another tech bubble and your skills haven't eroded, maybe it won't be so dire, but that's where it is right now.
This confirms that you are a DEI hire -- if you need to take a pay cut to move, then you are not worthy the money you are currently paid.
Whenever I move, I get a pay rise.

If you're in Canada, you WILL get cancelled for taking such a stand. And it will be far far worse than simply losing your job. You will be publicly shamed and ostracized, and no university will touch you with a 20ft pole. You will never work in academia again, and probably not be allowed to work in any white collar middle class job again. Your life will be ruined beyond recognition, all because you wanted to take a stand.

The best way to fight DEI is to do your best to ensure that these spoiled rats won’t be hired.
Yesterday I did my job to fight the onslaught of DEI.
We had a female JMC giving her talk. Her paper is reasonable, but nothing special.
However, I was able to completely derail the talk.
I’m quite proud of myself. I have developed a three-step approach:
1) First, I ask aggressive questions about the empirical method or theoretical assumptions. Regardless of their answer, I keep pushing back.
2) Second, I tell them that I don’t believe their magnitudes or mechanism. This always rattles them.
3) Third, as a final blow, I start having a side-conversation with the person sitting next to me. And I laugh under my breadth.
This three-step approach ensures that the female job candidate is completely rattled. She feels embarrassed and humiliated. And my job is done. I had an office meeting with her afterwards, and I could see that she had been crying in the bathroom. Victory!
Everyday, I do my job to fight the DEI queens of our profession. You should too. You can try using my three-steps approach. It’s easy to learn and a lot of fun to use.You should not be proud of yourself, it’s okay to not like their paper and not hire them but don’t be toxic.

The Supreme Court has said race or gender can be “a factor,” but it cannot tilt over into reverse discrimination. A request that you must hire a female or minority is clearly illegal. Your Dean likely knows this and will try to nudge you into breaking the law (the test is whether he will put the directive in writing — if not he is asking you go break the law, and knows it, but will not do so himself)
If he really doesn’t know and does put it in writing, have your chair forward the email to the university’s general counsel to confirm it is legal.
I am mostly just repeating the earlier poster’s advice and that person should review the geld for providing it.
I would add that the Supreme Court will likely narrow the scope of allowable affirmative action this term and that may heighten the extent to which deans try to push hiring committees out on a limb (without putting themselves in jeopardy).
