   From a Machiavellian perspective, diversity statement is absolutely brilliant.

   It allows universities to:
   1. Have a pretext to Illegally discriminate against wh/ite males, because the diversity statement will almost always reveal the ra/ce/gender of the applicant
   2. Filter out con/servatives who are honest enough to write their real opinion
   3. Force con/servatives to humiliate themselves if they want a job after going through all many years of school
   4. Placate the woke student body

   These are all goals of university admin, so from that perspective it’s brilliant. Kills four birds with one stone. Pronouns are another method of marking/humiliating defectors, but nothing is as brilliant as the diversity statement

   At some universities it is a separate process. You must make it through the diversity part before the given department can even give you a fly out.

   It's easy enough to say it's like a religious oath, which many mouthed with no sincerity over the years. The thing about that is MANY of the "anti-woke" people (not as many here, but many in the world) are all for religion and would be cool with a state church.

   I write diversity statements for $60 a pop. $150 if you want it "personalized". Over the past three years I have sold about 200 almost identical statements and no one seems to have noticed.

    Most departments have the final say and ignore them. A few places filter are the dean level. But not most.

    There’s also an identification problem because places that take them seriously were aiming to higher an URM candidate anyway. You don’t need a diversity statement to do that.

    When no URM candidate is available, they are inframarginal.

    As I said though, most hiring committees ignore them. Ask around, off the record, if you don’t believe that.

    It's a filtering mechanism. They're going to continue to do this until they are sure they aren't hiring conservatives.
