The US political system of federalism was relatively stable historically because of the iron-clad tradition of not pr0secuting the political opposition.
This likely NY charge creates a terr1ble precedent and makes the US much less politically stable for the long term. Presidents in the future will not step down at the end of their term if they believe they will be immediately h1t with show trials on ph0ny charges brought in h0sti1e jurisdictions with h0stile juries. Instead they will use their Constitutionally-derived status as Commander-in-Chief to pvrge the military of dissenters in order to stay in power. Since removal by imp3achment requires a nearly impossible 2/3 votes in the Senate it would be very hard to stop a president from doing so.
I understand the sentiment behind the idea of "nobody being above the law", but the consequences of following such a statement with ideological rigidity are potentially catastr0phic in the long run. Is it worth jeopardizing the entire nation's future and stability to put one person behind bars? I don't think so.
