   It's pretty sad. Fewer people are going to medical school or STEM in general. More are becoming lawyers, accountants, or some other paper pusher profession. People are going into tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars of student loan debt to major in something that pays $40k per year. It doesn't take a genius to see how this is going to play out over the next few decades.

   plenty of people doing medical. stem is not something americans should be doing, given the massive influx of immigrants in that.

   People on this forum are id/iots like this one. STEM is precisely what the best and brightest should be doing. Medical doctors dont innovate. They just treat people by following guidelines. Lawyerrs? lmao.

   Almost all of the smartest guys I knew in college, guys who would have governed colonies in the 19th cent, are working email jobs or programming at a tinder-for-dogs start up.
   In Victorian England the young elite would be sent to govern colonies of thousands of people, rewrite laws, plan railways, settle local disputes, learn an entirely foreign culture. And for the most part they succeeded. Young classics nerds ruled the earth.
   On the American frontier, you could move out to a brand new town and instantly be at the top of your field. Judges and lawyers and doctors all in their twenties. The richest man in town, the local monopolist, just pushing 30.
   For most of human history, the elites brought their children along with them to learn how to rule. Plato wanted the warrior class witnessing battles from childhood. The British Navy had a good stock of children on all their ships (see Master and Commander).
   Now if you're a student coming out of a good college, what're your options? Make candy-crush more addictive? Make a 200 slides a week consulting at Bain? Copy and paste documents in contract law?

   Smartest people are doing banal things rather than killing and colonizing others. What a tragedy.
