We had a couple of comparable students apply to PhD programs. Female got a lot of admits, going to a top 5. Male got one admit to a top 20.
Three fantastic male RAs, one subpar female RA. Guess PhD placement.

Case study from few years back..... Two almost identical students from same undergrad in same predoc group. Both took all their undergrad classes together with same marks. Both got great letters from same set of well known economists. One got top 5 admit and multiple top 10s. One got no top 10s admites.... Guess genders

My comment got deleted. So I am not commenting anymore. Ejmr has changed a lot. I was speaking of certain quotas (I am an adcom) in a honest fashion.. Don't know why there is no freedom of speech here
And, there are quotas in the job market too?
Sorry bro, the mod is really not making knowledge flow on this forum with the incessant deleting and deleting. Must every objective view be seen as "attacking women"? Mhen, I tire for this mods

This post, above all others, shows that EJMR is overrun with undergrads. Nobody cares about where their undergrads go. Fake news.
This is false. I care where my undergrads go to grad school, and I actually care how they are doing in grad school too.
Li@r. If you actually did then you'd make calls to your friends in top 5 for the male RA's. I do that often for my jmc's because I care.

Did you adjust for personality scores?
Lol. This is quite irrelevant for phd admissions, no one has any way to know your personality (unless you are such a pain in the a** that the letter writers account for that).

Wtf. Most of us LRMs havent friends at top 5 who can influence the grad admission process.

This reveals that your letter for male are oversell but not for woman.
Four RAs at my organization applying for PhD programs this year.
Three males: All very good highly valued RAs, from good undergrad schools, two with co-authorships on impressive working papers. Two took additional grad-level math classes. One with very advanced coding skills. One with a perfect GRE. (I don’t know the others' GREs.)
Results: Schools ranked #15-35
One female: Below average RA (never expressed much interest in research, economists sometimes complained about assigning her tasks), poor coding skills, from an mediocre undergrad, no extra math courses after undergrad, no working paper.
Result: Top 10
A similar pattern happened last year, where the four females all placed in top 10 programs, and the four males placed in rank 10-25. (Though at least last year, the quality of the RAs and their resumes was roughly equal.) -
If your prior is that quality is usually better on male rather than female. And they had same letter, that make easy for admissions boards.

It's because there are a bunch of latte drinking fajjots moderating the board.

I know of two too 10 phd places that have committed to 50/50 intake to phd.
One Faculty at such school told me she recognised this means drop in quality but this is the only way to correct discrimination in the job market !!I know at least one in the top 10 that does that. And the rational is : Since women are advantaged on the job market, then the more we take women, the better our placement will look, independant of the quality/research potential of those candidates.
