If most institutions demand female candidates in the job market, what is the best strategy for graduate schools then?
This profession becomes so pathetic, merit is no longer rewarded. We even tolerate professors to marry their own graduate students. We are making our profession great again, I guess.

Case study from few years back..... Two almost identical students from same undergrad in same predoc group. Both took all their undergrad classes together with same marks. Both got great letters from same set of well known economists. One got top 5 admit and multiple top 10s. One got no top 10s admites.... Guess genders

There are simply no possible items on the CV that would make Asian male be as likely to place as high as an African American female.
I guess for HRM admissions, an IMO medal and a top math-econ double major would probably put a male applicant on a similarly stable footing as a black female pre-doc whose only virtue is ticking the right diversity boxes.
One problem is that AA is not well balanced. Changing the attitude in hiring and admitting minorities and females at top schools even slightly, implies a conspicuous change in the probability of an individual male candidate to get into his school of choice. It is way more damaging to male candidates than one would guess at first sight.

And then the feminists will wonder why, of all the graduates of a given PhD program, we will assume that the females are on average worse than their male counterparts and got where they are only thanks to AA. Because it's true.
The females that were at that level got admitted to a better program (except at the top-1), and the females below that level got admitted there. A male had to be exceptionally good to get one of the few remaining spots.
eventually it will be hard to tell who is better or not, as all metrics of evaluation will start taking demographics into account, be it job market applications, editorial standards for top 5 publications and prize committees. Experts will obviously gripe about the decreasing quality of work being rewarded on EJMR, but the rest of the world will keep thinking that glass ceiling after glass ceiling is being shattered.
