QJE <<<<<<<<<<<< TE, JET
Top 10-20 journals for micro theory

^cbce here.
Previous poster says: mostly agree but would add MOR in the tier of Rand, move JEEA (and EJ) into the tier of Jet, and Jebo (and EER and EJOR) into the tier of ET, switch places between EI and JRUDon't agree with placing Operations journals that high for econ audience (I am in a B. School, a different story). I would only include OR at or slightly above ET.
JEBO is a good journal but not so much for theory, maybe as good as ET although I think slightly below.
EER and EJOR no way as good as ET, EER at most with the group after ET, EJOR really does not count for Econ Theory. MOR at most the level of MSS for an econ audience really.9443 is mostly correct but you cannot rank ET as low as EL or JMatE, no way.
Given these, I make the following small changes:
1-5. ECTA/AER/JPE/QJE/Restud
6-7. JET/TE
8-14. RAND/AEJ/GEB/MS/IER/JEEA/EJ
15-17. ET/JEBO/OR
18-22. JEMS, IJIO, SCW, IJGT, RED
23-25. JMathE, EL, EI, EER
26-30. JRU, MSS, JPET, EB, T&D, MOR
31. BEJTE
32-? IGTR, IJET, Games, TEL,... -
There, I am quite satisfied with my list. Only thing is that EJ does not really publish theory but the applied theory (mainly macro or IO) they publish is the same level as IER, I think.
Although they publish little theory, general prestige for a theorist for CJE, Economica and Scand. JE would probably be somewhere around tier 6 or 7. Souther EJ more like tier 7.
In applied theory JLawE and JLEO would be around tier 5, for JLE perhaps tier 4 even.
In IO, RIO would be around BE perhaps or slightly above.
More importantly, REDynamics publishes theory, around tier 4 I say. JEDC perhaps tier 5.
Finance journals are too hard to rank for a theorist but JF would be with JET, RFS with tier 3, and JFE in between. -
This!
JEBO is a clubby journal with a very very severe downward trend. I'd have loved to have a paper in there 10 ears ago, but today I would rather send my stuff to Econ Letters than JEBO.
Aglee. Papers published there are horrible. Big names dump trash for their RAs.

Good luck getting your theory paper in ECTA. You're confusing reality with fiction.
Tell that to the tenure committees that keep saying you have to have top field to have a chance, they are deluded
What I mean is that ECTA don't generally take in theory papers. You have significantly better chance to get one in QJE or AER, both of which qualify as a top journal.
