Same here, although we have a few research centers that generally buy us out of the fourth course. So if you are deadwood, you teach 2-2; but, the rest of us do 2-1 or 1-2. Buying out the third course is seriously expensive though -- on the order of $30k.
2-1 sounds silly to me. Unless you can stack courses and do 3-0 a three course load means very little. The top places all let you do just that.
This is a stupid statement. A 2-1 is still better than a 2-2, and not on the order of magnitude of "very little". Number of preps is also important.

B-schools tend to want you to teach more and to have more visibility.

IMHO, yes. More conferences in spring than fall => 2-1 makes attending conferences less disruptive.
Never ever go to a school that requires 4-4 or 4-3. You will not have any time to conduct research.Duh... the reason you go to those schools is because you suck at research
No, you can work your way up if you have minimal preps and work like hell. One student of mine placed poorly and is doing that climb right now.
