Suppose I'm at a goodish UK department that has money during the 2020 job market carnage. Suppose we want to hire a senior macro person. Who would you go for? I find it very difficult to find seniors in macro in the UK right now. Yes,we can look abroad, but there is too much uncertainty to attact them.
UK Macro seniors

Good questions!
OP, there are good macroeconomists in the UK, although not too many. if you don't know good macroeconomists in the UK, why are you in the committee? How senior?
& What sort of macro?
Because s/he is trying to fish names to infer what people think about his/her colleagues.
It is like a beauty context in which the organizer hopes the jury doesn't indicate preference for someone the organizer doesn't like. It is not about having insights on promising people, it is about having reassurance that the people you don't like are not considered relevant. [or at least this explanation might be the reason for this odd question from a person in a search committee in the UK]

They don’t have any which puts them in the difficult position of having no one capable of evaluating who would be / would not be a good hire.

1. How is it possible to have no macro people at all?
2. Even if they have no macro people, they likely know the top journals in other fields and hence can evaluate based on output quality. I do macro, but I can still evaluate the quality of a micro candidate based on their output and which journals they publish in.

How senior?
& What sort of macro?Endorsing these follow-up questions. Also, how much leeway do you guys have to hire 2 juniors in case you don't find the right fit at the senior level? (the answer to the second question is important for your strategy, I guess)

Depends on what kind of macro and how senior and level of department. Actually would help a great deal if you just said which department is hiring.
But a list of very good senior people worth checking if satisfied:
Cantore, Sustek, Van Rens, Carvalho, Rendahl, Fella, Ascari, Zanetti, Ferrero, Leon-Ledesma -
Sustek great, and underrated at QMUL.
