   I’m currently undecided between two AP offers

   - one is in a russell group university in Uk
   - second one is in one of these “excellence” schools in Italy

   The salary is not an issue, I am Italian and having lived abroad over the last few years I would benefit from tax breaks that would make the position in IT competitive.

   The only real difference is in the length of the contract. While the position in IT lasts 5 years, the position in Uk potentially turns permanent after 3 years. I wonder how secure academic jobs really are in the uk.

   Do not come to the UK, it is terrible. The 3 year probation sounds like somewhere in the South West of the UK. If so, I would avoid that place.

   UK may be terrible, but chances of passing 3 year probation is close to 100%. If you worry about this, ask your potential employer a) what exactly are their criteria for passing probation and b) has anyone failed recently. Most usual answers are a) having a pulse and b) are you kidding me.

   This is deceiving. If you fail you might not get the sack, but you get moved to a teaching contract where you end up under someone elses whip. Oh, and you'll lose all sorts of other priveleges with that too. Including your research allowance, office (if you get one) etc etc.

   I'd only pay taxes on 10% of the gross salary. Basically no taxes

   If it is where I think it is, there are rumours of people there (once moved to teaching) having to interview to get their "old jobs" back.

    In UK there will be more pressure to publish. In the long run I still think it’s a better choice with many academic options and exit opportunities

    Given that it is five years and not two or three, I'd definitely go for Italy. I am in a UK Russell group university (trying to get back to EU) and yes, most people pass probation but not everyone does (I know of a few cases). Moreover, as noted above, they can put you in all the teaching-related committees if you're not doing as well as expected.

    Even if you inquire regarding criteria, these change over time, in the same manner that they won't give you a sheet of paper with what you need to get promotion.

    Yes, of course you go to Italy and forget about ever going anywhere. Drown all your dreams and hopes in pasta...

    People really have no freaki n idea. You talk about admin and polítics? You go to Italy (outside of Bocconi, eief) and then get back to me in nepotism, lack of resources, mediocrity and low pay.

    We all know that Italy has lots of problems, that's nothing new. However, many people don't realise how UK academia is, relatively speaking, declining rapidly. Working and pay conditions have deteriorated and you must always account for the fact that pensions are becoming a joke so you'll have to save for these early on as well.

    A guy at a notorious place in the south of UK did not pass and went to a London university. He was decent, and published well. Three solos (I think) at 3* journals. This wasn't enough.
