Good school, good location, they will survive.
UMD Finance wtf????

Soon PK and VM will retire. Once that happens the place will become a top 60ish school. They won’t go back because they have no money and won’t be able to hire productive people. They are already around #100 for papers in top finance journals in 2019 in the UTD ranking

Tito will never retire. In the most trying hours, through dismal nights and endless interrogations and maltreatment, during days of killing solitude in cells and close confinement, we were always sustained by the hope that all these agonies were not in vain, that there was a strong and mighty finance department, however far away, in which all the dreams for which we were fighting had been fulfilled.

They are 62, a tiny bit behind Yale?

Sure, Boston College is # 5 in the world, MIT Sloan is # 61 in the world. MIT Sloan WTF???? It is not like if you have a point, then you can back it up with any s**tty "evidence".

The evidence is not s**tty, you just need to know how to read and interpret it. This ranking is based on number of 3 top finance publications. First, this implies that the ranking will be less accurate for the very top schools, in which several people publish in Econ journals and publishing top Econs is preferred than publishing top finance. Second, the ranking does not adjust very much for the size of the faculty. Large and small departments are treated almost the same.
Now, Sloan and Yale are both relatively small departments in which most faculty tried to publish in top Econ journals. This is why they are not as high in the ranking. Booth and UPenn are still high because they have like 40 people, so they publish a lot of top Econ and a lot of top finance.
In this context, UMD is a sizable department and the faculty generally targets finance journals (except perhaps PK). The fact that they are around 100 in the world but they were around 20ish until 2 years ago clearly is a terrible signal. Hopefully for them it’s a short run adjustment and they will be able to come back

Do they have the money/teaching needs for TT? If both their MBA finance track and finance masters have disappeared (or tiny classes) why would the school replace the dozen that left? Doesn’t the fin dept need to downsize anyhow?
The finance masters will never disappear with so many Chinese students flooding in.
