   I don't think calming down will help - you are simply not intelligent. In fact, you sound extremely unintelligent.

   Even for EJMR this is a moment of unadulterated denial and self-delusion. For centuries, a segment was systematically and informally deprived of almost *all* opportunities. Now, when a single program announces its intent to focus on that segment (rightly so except for being almost irreparably late), the result is predictable.
   And demonstrated in this thread.

   What's delusive is believing the evil cultural marxists have any more compassion for the "deprived of all opportunities" than, say, the USSR had for some people's liberation front in Africa they were sponsoring.
   Plus, lumping together contemporary people with some individuals in a remote past on the basis of some shared DNA is utterly racist and stupid.

   Are academic departments always unanimous in their department-wide decisions? Do all faculty members are always pleased with the students they recruit, or the new faculty that join them? Are you upset that departments can make decisions without 100% faculty approval, or do you not like that a (presumed) majority of UChicago English faculty made a decision that doesn't align with your beliefs?

   Do you really actually believe the majority of the department's faculty is happy with this?

   I suppose free speech doesn't extend to the department's faculty and how they choose to train their students?
   While I question whether this decision will tangibly benefit the lives of Black people, I have no real major issue with this (I don't study English, so...). Departments regularly reject applicants if they don't think they're a proper fit given their research interests. What UChicago English is doing is exactly that, albeit to its extreme (only considering applicants with a specific research agenda).

    Weird that they would have this lightning rod exclusionary policy instead of just saying that they would encourage applicants with an interest in Black studies (and then admit Black studies applicants).

    End-result: lots of 1st generation emigres who were already privileged and from the top 1% families in their home countries (e.g., Ghana, Liberia, South Africa) rather than homegrown African-Americans who were true descendants of slaves.

    You guys don’t seem to get it: this is about POWER. Stop thinking that exposing the woke’s incoherence or logical inconsistencies means anything, because it doesn’t. It’s a cope.

    The individuals and institutions promoting critical race theory are not interested in maintaining intellectual credibility or good-faith debate. They want one thing: the power to control and punish their political enemies. That’s it. That’s what this is about.

    And they’ll get it, as long as their opponents - us - refuse to play by their rules, thus foregoing the accumulation of enough cultural and institutional power to destroy the woke.     I didn't entertain your original question because it's irrelevant to my initial point: faculty making collective decisions about training in their department isn't antithetical to free speech and can be, in fact, an extension of free speech.

    Still, I'll answer your questions:

    I don't know if a majority were "happy" with it, but I think that a majority approved that decision after thorough discussion. Big decisions generally require negotiations in which some walk away unhappy to some extent. Regarding your second question: yes, I think faculty would speak up against this. As you said, they could non-controversially state their lack of expertise in Black studies. People can have reasonable reservations about this decision.

    The academic market will have to clear

    The U of C is making a bet that in the Fall of 2025, there will be a large number of AP positions in Black Studies that will open up to address unmet needs.

    If undergraduate enrollments in Black Studies courses skyrocket by then, the U of C English Dept will be correct in their decision this year.

    Undergraduate students will either take survey courses like a Black Studies 101 or major in it. So the employers of these students will have to make a hiring decision on the value of the majors.

    Some will certainly go on to law schools and journalism at the NYT, WaPo, CNN, etc. The question is supply vs. demand.
