Some nutjobs in my department proposed something similar this summer when our national moral panic was peaking. No one spoke up against it. Most cheered them on or stayed silent out of fear. I threw all principled and practical arguments at it. The dept took a vote in the end and the proposal was narrowly defeated. Two observations:
1) This worked mainly because I come from a supposedly oppressed demographic. Thanks to some of my identity-markers, I get away with making arguments that, say, white straight males can't. I doubt many humanities profs visit this forum, but if you are like me, you have a moral duty to step up and protect all the sacred norms of your institution/discipline. There is a silent majority, however slim, out there. They are waiting to follow you.
2) Those of you in social sciences and STEM. Hold the line. There are still people like me in the humanities. We motivate ourselves to continue our fight, against all odds, partly by telling ourselves that we have allies in other departments. Use any and all means to prevent racialized liberalism to gain a foothold in your discipline. Hold no prisoners. Give no quarter. As someone upthread said, this is about power. War is on. Identify and reach out to the resistance in the humanities departments. They need your support.

I made arguments that any 8 year old with basic moral sense would make. A subfield is being used as a racial proxy, and this is de facto racial discrimination, etc. The most important thing that the silent majority needs to understand is that these activists in their departments have grown so complacent intellectually that they don't know how to argue back when someone makes appeal to blindingly obvious principles, the way adults are often stumped by kids' innocent questions. They're counting on your silent acquiescence.

^^ Why would it be illegal to recruit an entire cohort that specializes in one area? Like let’s bring in an entire class of health economists studying health disparities. One issue would be who would advise them all if they all had the same area of interest.
