Mostly what is happening is that, like everybody else, UC English department is cutting # of new grad students, probably massively. Saying "we are only admitting bl ackness studies for justice" is a less embarrassing way of saying "we are cutting 90% of our program because we are broke". This way, they don't have to admit they are broke and normal people get the basic idea: don't bother applying.
University of Chicago English: Only "Black Studies" applicants to be admitted

Yeah, I think that's a reasonable explanation. They could just have not announced anything and just take in less applicants- such an announcement will cause more controversy that good.

The actual alternative was probably take in zero people; likely this was a tactic the department used with the U to get any spots at all.

That would actually be a decent theory. My predictions would still hold though.

From what I know about UChicago they aren't exactly the type of school that falls for the woke nonsense, so I don't think this is a way to get through the uni administration. Chicago is one of the schools that are explicitly pro-free speech and even issued a anti-trigger warning statement quite recently.

This is a reasonable explanation, and made me feel better for a bit. But then I went back and re-read the actual text on their website, and it is still such a depressing piece of garbage, even with this (comparatively) benign possible explanation. "As such, we believe all scholars have a responsibility to know the literatures of African American, African diasporic, and colonized peoples, regardless of area of specialization, as a core competence of the profession." Really?

In some sense, this is always the problem when you come up with some BS story to cover up embarrassing reality. You kind of need to commit to the BS and sometimes end up looking dumb. On the other hand, their willingness to commit to something this dumb is still worrying.

^^ Why would it be illegal to recruit an entire cohort that specializes in one area? Like let’s bring in an entire class of health economists studying health disparities. One issue would be who would advise them all if they all had the same area of interest.
If they start talking about this strategy as a pretext for recruiting more students of a specific race, they cross the line. And you know they will.
-
This sounds reasonable, but I can easily see this coming back to bite them when the admissions are announced. They only admitted 20% the usual cohort? Is that because they think Black studies is only 20% as valuable? Were they discriminating against the largely Black applicant pool? Chicago, do better. And so on.

They pretty much are. From one of the UoC English prof's twitter: https://twitter.com/brownisthecolor/status/1304413490812276741
"you won’t be surprised that the faculty who pushed for this decision have already been “cautioned” about “racial bias” in admissions <Face with raised eyebrow> bc years of all-white cohorts were fine apparently"

Yeah pal, we get it. If we disagree we’re uneducated. All too familiar strategy of being right by definition. Just don’t forget to state you’re ray sis in the beginning of seminars
Thanks to the wh1te guilt behavior and DemoKKKratic Party.
Cultural Marxism is working.
These nut/ters again. Cultural Marxism is headquartered in the basement of Comet Pizza.

The problem is more that you’re invested in a conspiracy theory. Can you name the foundational texts of this alleged movement? Can you name the organizational founders, or even name the organizations that adhere to this alleged ideology? Of course not, because they don’t exist.
-
It’s not an organized movement. It’s just collective hysteria pushed by indoctrination. Indoctrination of marxist philosophy. Founder and foundational texts can be found by following the name. Organizations that follow it... there are quite a few, no? The one on the title of the thread seems to be one
