There are many previous threads on EJMR about Edinburgh that are much more positive. Things may have taken a negative turn over the last 1-2 years. But these new hires they want to make, particularly new head, could turn this around. Fundamentals are still good, at least by UK standards.

Edinburgh is known to have the best Computer Science Department in the UK so you will have access to many smart colleagues and people there.
It also has a solid Economics Department but definitely not top 5 (maybe top 10-15 depending on what you’re looking for).
Not too expensive to live in, very good city, Scottish government rule the world from there etc.

As an external who visited the place not long ago, my feelings are mixed. I met some good people of all ages. On the minus side, many powerful seniors there seemed to be complete dooochbags. Not sure where the place is going but it does not seem to be shooting for the stars, even by UK standards. I can think of at least 8 other places in the UK that seem clearly better.
