They flying out? Did they hire seniors? Salaries for strong seniors rumored to be great.
Yes...But an additional feature is required. The prospective seniors should lack backbone. It is in fact accounted during selection process. HOD will only push for those people for professorships who:
a. she thinks can be under her control
b. will not easily get a professorship in any other place.
Last few people appointed as chairs were like this. They are good, but satisfy the above two conditions.
One of the most unhealthy departments. There are problems in every department, but no where one can find such a ridiculous HOD. She is one of the worst human beings and can destroy nice academic environments. Wherever she was, reports are bad..be it Texas A&M, Birmingham ...
So Juniors... if you have other options please do not come here and make the mistake we did. We are all looking for opportunities to go out from here. Even Kelsey is moving.. ( after being here for almost 15 years)

I almost took at job in Exeter. I thought that all involved in the search were pleasant people, including the HoD. And, as I see people asking on this thread - yes, they are willing and able to pay senior faculty well. By well I mean above $200k. But this push for higher salaries is a somewhat recent trend, so I imagine people who have been there for a while are paid relatively poorly.
If there is any truth to the rumors about the Dean, HoD, and disgruntled faculty, then it seems like I made a wise decision.

Probably the best decision you made in your life. Look at the exodus of people with good publications. Dieter Balkenborg, David kelsey, Yoske Igarashi....all of them had very decent publications. Another junior macro guy left, but recently a junior macro perosn with very similar profile got promoted.
Gareth Myles might have had no top publications in recent years, but he got the only ESRC centre in the University. He left partly because of this nasty woman.
She destroyed the internal seminar culture of the department. Then she hired a guy from Essex. When she saw that he is not a yes man started harassing him...taking disciplinary action for a slight problem in teaching!!!(btw the deputy HOD has horrible teaching rating). She can promote someone with 2 JEBO and a Leadership Quarterly (even though Exeter Econ is going to REF as a Econ department), but gives hardtime to a person with a R&R in Econometrica, EER and publication in JEBO. She delegates a huge amount of recruitment work of a Macro chair to a junir guy (he is good btw), but when realises he is not a yes man pushes him to a teaching contract (even after having a solo ET, R&R in GEB and EER)... The reaosn is clear...She and ALlen only cares about the coming REF. The horrible rule states, "One can even submit the papers of people currently in Teahcin contracts, but then it is not going to count towards the number of FTE submitted...Thus Numerator goes up, denominator remians the same. This is how this lady is destroying the environment of once a beautiful collegiate department.
So do things need to be more substantiated??
If the HOD is such a disaster, then why is the department thriving? Her significant other is one of the best theorists in the UK. You people make me sick.
Can anyone please explain HOW THE DEPARTMENT IS THRIVING. And HER SIGNIFICANT OTHER IS SMART, but what has he done in the last 6 years? One T&D and one GEB!
