we're paying 70k + to fresh phds no publications and v.generous research budgets..
..shame we've forgotten about the rest of the department.Can they still continue to pay this money after the COVID 19 crisis?

One reason for this hype is that the discussion is about an economics department. Since EJMR is about economic academics,op here are more sensitive about aggressive working environment and poor wellbeing.
Though I cannot confirm what is said in this thread, my own experience seems to show that the reported problematic behavior is observed in other institutions.
It is less to the day light since it may not happen in an economics school or the institutions are very low rank/too small to expose this type of behavior.
