   And I thought my Deans lacks credibility because of not having a PhD... And I thought my university has everything upside down because of promoting to senior management positions people who are not academics (or lousy academics)...

   Why would anybody in their mind hire a film maker with a masters in creating writing for a Dean???

   Dean is a clown. Has been a clown at previous places, so not sure why he got hired.

   Hey, he was a filmmaker at Sundance and he has a masters in Creative Writing, surely that's credentials enough for a millennial thought leader.

   The dean is a nutcase. But the HOD is more that. She is also corrupt.

   I pretty sure that the REF committee will rank Exeter Economics research environment as excellent!

   Senior professors with very good reputation are regularly harassed by the Dean on the advice of the HOD. On the other hand the spouse of the HOD who used to be a good theorist at some time but now completely defunct is protected. Thus it is a complete mess here.

   Don’t know of any decent UK departments that would hire a new PhD with no publications as senior lecturer. What was once a flourishing and up and coming Econ dept has turned into a basket case

   If we tried to hire a former PhD student with no pubs as SL, they would close my department the day after. I am not even at a top 10.

   What I am hearing here about Exeter is truly worrying. But, yes, because it's "Russell Group" it will get good REF scores for environment. What a corrupt system.

   Just did a fact check and figured out that the department recruited people with phds from Harvard (junior hire), Princeton (from Oxford) and MIT(from WB). They have more than decent publication record for Exeter. I don't know what the dean or hod are up to, but they definitely are not doing horrible.

   I have not "fact checked" the department and dean, but on a general note your "method" is not sound.

   You cannot detect things going wrong with your method for many reasons:

   1. Person with a degree from a top uni at a dismal place signals that the person is a lemon. Even the best department produces a few lemons per year. Hence what you consider to be a positive piece of information, is in fact a very negative piece of information. What you are reporting sounds like a department with historically decent reputation, trying desperately to pretend they are at par while sliding.

   3. There are people with good records everywhere, by sheer luck. The way how you detect if the place has lost their minds, is if those people with good records are not promoted faster and better than the losers. For example if you see a guy from Harvard with AER, and a graduate from the same university with nothing, and they are both senior lecturers, that is a good indication that the place is sliding into oblivion.

    Exeter to the toilet. The sad fact is they've only managed to pillage mercenary deadwood.

    Many just don't want to take the punt and go to Exeter which is the end of the world. It's like Newcastle or Lancaster. Proper outlying sheithole.

    This might be changing. They pillaged a whole research centre recently. But the star profs did not want to ever have to go there. They managed to negotiate some office space in London. If Exeter opened up a London campus, then they could start recruiting some serious folk who'd only consider the golden triangle.

    I’ve been to Exeter. I think it quite nice. Its warm (for England) and near the sea. It a nice university town, quaint and all that. You can have a nice life there.

    JUNIORS NEVER THINK OF COMING HERE as long as the present HOD's tenure is on (which keeps getting extended)

    Yes they do. The jointly take away £300K a year and are one of the Highest paid professors in the University. However, one of them is the worst performing professors. The HOD has decent publications but then again Exeter goes on to pay extra money to get her publications by investing in her student, who anyway was recruited in an undemocratic way.
