   Good departments in development (in no particular order): MIT, Northwestern, Chicago, Harvard, Berkeley, Yale, Stanford, UCSD, USC, Duke, Brown, Columbia, LSE, UCL, Zurich, Oxford.

   Excellent in development economics. Probably top 15-20 in the field

   yes. what would be your ranking for development now?
   MIT >
   Yale = Northwestern = Berkeley = Chicago >
   Harvard = LSE >
   Stanford = UCSD = UCL >
   Columbia = Zurich >
   Michigan = Oxford = BU = Duke

   Oxford has a lot of good development institutes like the one for migration. It definitely doesn't rank below a no-name place like Zurich.
   The Zurich tr.o.ll on here must be as deluded as the Warwick one.

    Come on guys... The University of Zurich has with no doubt one of the strongest Econ Departments in Europe (probably somewhere in the top 5). But for some reasons it has a lot of haters because it has become particulary strong after the massive donation by UBS.

    It is kinda the same with PSG when it comes to soccer. But in contrast to sports it is kinda childish to be jealous of an University because they have a lot of money. We rather should be happy that companies and wealthy individuals do donate high amounts for research.

    I think the hate comes as there may be a number of people on this forum who (rightly or not) think they'd be a good fit for UZH, and are not given a slight change for the reason of their extreme affirmative action approach to hiring.

    Any news about Tahbz-Salehi, Schoefer, Alvarez actually coming from Northwestern, Berkeley, Chicago?

    That’s exactly what they’re doing. And from what I’ve heard, Ossa and Scheuer are fantastic department chairs. The two rookies they hired this year had competing offers from Michigan, Columbia, Berkeley. And they have senior offers out to Tahbz-Salehi, Schoefer, Alvarez who would all be outstanding additions.

    Bonn is a great University but Zurich has a higher research output (except when it comes to Micro Theory). Just have a look here:

    SSE, PSE and Warwick are at the same level or weaker than Bonn (and therefore weaker than Zurich #transitivity). LSE and UCL are better than Zurich. TSE might be at the same level or slightly better. So to put Zurich into the top 5 of Europe seems to be reasonable.

    You have smaller places like EIEF, IIES and CEMFI and LBS which are in terms of quality comparable to UCL — but smaller. So we hear less of them wrt to job rumors.

    Just check top5s publications on the Tilburg rankings which is the most objective criteria.

    However, for both phd students, assist profs and seniors Zurich would now beat Warwick and typically Bocconi because of the $$. So they are in an upward trajectory. But Bocconi is also doing great on that front.
