How can they pay a Full prof 37k? That's for maitre de conf isn't it?

No it is for a tenured full prof (Professeur des universités), but which precise salary you get will depend on different things, including years of experience. A maitre de conférence is paid on a different scale (even lower).

You see that depending on rank (which depends on years of experience either in academia, in an institution, in the industry if it is relevant to the position, either in France or abroad...), a Professeur des Universités gets paid from 3 125,58 € gross per month to 6 227,73 €.

You have here the monthly wages for Maitre de conf. It includes public healthcare and pensions. You have to remove 20% to have the net wage.

You begin in the "Classe normale"

For professors, you have

You begin in the "2e classe". So at the very beginning, you have 37k a year. In reality, you can have more since your previous years count as experience and you can earn a little bit more.

Top universities like TSE or PSE add private resources to give more money. But it"s an exception, not the rule

What I don't get with some of these large European departments: wouldn't they be better off with half the faculty size and double remaining people's salary? I just can't believe that this is an efficient use of resources.
Because man, these salaries... EUR 66k gross is 47k net, or 3900/month. And at the lower bound: 37k gross is ~29k net, or 2400 per month. Knowing that a decent apartment will start at 1.5k/month, I just don't see how people in high demand would find this competitive. I wonder what the mood is in these places. Is everybody disgruntled?

I would like to understand who usually makes these comments: are you from the US, from Asia or a third-world country ? (serious question)

Europeanbro who lives and works in the US, but spends (or rather: spent, pre-covid) a lot of time in France for leisure. Unlike many here, living in Paris has long been something that I would have really wanted. But I don't think my spouse and kid will be super keen on seeing our household income divided by two and our COL go up by a substantive margin to support my midlife crisis.

"the french net"
is not the net in the rest of the world.
Let me make an example
You sign a great contract of 5k a month
21% goes to pension/insurance/etc
which means 3.95 k is your net
on which you would pay income taxes depending on your family situation.
If you are single that would be about 17%
which leaves you with 3.33 K
net
then they charge you for TV like 130 Euro
for housing tax about 1200E
Techinically you remain with 3k
Then you pay your rent 1.31k ( as in France that 1/3 of net is max)
and you are left with 1.7k to live as a "king" in Paris.

The thing to understand in France is that the wages are fixed by the French State at a national level. Universities don't decide how much you will earn as a new assistant prof. The French ministry will decide it, and it will be the same wage if you are in Finance, in Physics and in you are in Arts Plastiques or Old Greek

The thing to understand is that other places in France manage to offer more on private sector positions (in fact, even other departments at Dauphine do that too). Why not you? Are you worried that your new colleagues may make more than you do?

Many people do things on the side, e.g. write reports as a paid consultant for the government, gigs in the private sector, write paid reports for think-tanks, write mediocre textbook and make them mandatory for tens of thousands of students, double dipping with a position at another university or another research lab, etc. Of course, to do all this it helps to have connections.

You're talking about some positions (not all) in 3 or 4 universities in a country that has 67 universities. You can describe a situation by using a few outliers and claim to describe the French system. But I think that before describing the exception, one should describe the standard situation.

On the low pay, there is a huge pool of Europeans who have an unbelieveably strong geographic preference for living in EU. There's really no place anywhere in the world that is comparable in lifestyle (i.e. relaxed, developed, great public goods, low crime, promiscuous, etc.).

So given the pool of candidates that would never accept a job outside EU, they can really low-ball everyone. The job security is the justification people need for taking such a position.
