Is this more about her advisor? This is SvN’s first full candidate since he moved to Columbia, perhaps he’s looking for a win here? Could have been any candidate and VM got lucky. If he wants to control the department, how would it look if he couldn’t even place his student well?
VM Columbia to Stern

Why so much obsession over one candidate? She does PE and recently tenured SH does it as well and she has a coauthor there. Who cares? I hate DEI as much as the next discriminated male but vilifying one candidate isn’t going to change things. Badmouthing someone to no end is just whiny and lame.

I don’t believe one candidate is being vilified. More like the system. You can’t accept candidates to face discrimination and shvtup. It’s not just candidates, I see come advisors here pointing out how their students got crowded out due to fake letters. I condemn the personal attacks as much as you do, but what’s wrong is wrong and the broken bits need to pointed at.

I’m confused… how is this about DEI? Isn’t VM ethnically South Asian and did her undergraduate studies in India? How would she “count” to any DEI committee today that bases their actions on only narrow definitions of underprivileged populations..? am I missing something.. like is she not part of the upper castes?

Chromosomes, but this is not even about DEI. It is about advisors overselling and crowding out other candidates who are actually good.

This is absurd. Power within a department is not influenced by one placement.
