Holy guacamole, that paper is bad. I’m so surprised HRM peopl can write such bad JMP. She had every resource in the world. Columbia supported her in every way. Fed, Harvard and what not. And she comes up with this half-copied half nonsensical jmp? Phd should not be granted.

Most international undergrads in the US are much better off than her. She graduated at the top of her class at Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi, which is one of the very top colleges in India.
So basically she topped her class at the top college in Delhi University for undergraduates, did very well at an MIT masters program, published in JFE and has a number of insightful working papers in real estate, and yet you can attribute her success to DEI. Shocking right?
Not quite. I happen to know some things about Indian universities. Firstly, most high IQ Indians choose engineering/medicine which leaves only a few high IQ students for other fields. Delhi University is not a top university in India and LSR is one of the good schools in that university. The class size is very small and bring a tanker among 50 or 100 students is hardly something I’d wanna brag about after putting up such a sh!Tahoe of a JMP and appalling performance in interviews. The scholarships are somewhat misrepresented (writing 1~ 100) gives the impression that the scholarships are highly selective which is not the case. Most of these scholarships are named and given to several students at LSR and barely cover anything. A lot of other scholarships are hardly known. Bringing this up only because she mentioned about the scholarship while interviewing (it was odd since nobody mentions UG scholarships in their job market interviews, tell me about the model in your paper). Lastly, she received interviews only because of HRM background and having a very pushy advisor. Think about all those other candidates she crowded out because of that. We still had hope in the two real estate papers. She couldn’t answer questions that a co-author ought to know. Huge red flag. There were so many good MRM candidates on the market this year who did not receive a chance because HRM advisors wrote overselling letters and pushed candidates, gave them R&R.
I am at a Columbia. I cannot give the specifics without outing myself. There are a lot of vile and personal comments here which are highly inappropriate. The fact of the matter is that VM has been propped up by some members of our department for various reasons. Some wanted a good placement for their student and some, for the department. Her JMP is borrowed from Davis et al which happened during her time at HBS, which again was discriminatory against other candidates. I remember when she presented her JMP last year and it was complete garbage. In fact the paper wasn’t even ready until October. There were mistakes which were corrected, ideas which were given and her JMP improved (by colleagues.) I’m sure any other candidate had they received that kind of support, favors and image management would have been an even bigger star. I can’t speak much about her co-authored papers, but having interacted with her, I know she cannot write computer programs, solve models or come up with them. On paper, she’s an excellent candidate but so are many others and deep down she’s full of bs, only polished and very carefully and presented.
Why you do this to your fellow internal person? Why you say this? You should defend externally and criticize internally.
