VM Columbia to Stern

One of her co-authors said VM was a complete liability on the project. Pretending as though it was her idea and never took up any work. All work was done by SVN, JP and AG. VM did no work but presented others work as hers. That was apparent to SVN and AG only after JP left the paper to focus on other work. JP was the brain behind all implementation and modeling.

In the end, I think we are all just jealous here. Jealous that she got added to papers, while we slaved away to be a line in the acknowledgement. Jealous that she got sold as the next nobel winner, while we struggled to get interviews with lukewarm letters. Jealous that she got all the help one could get, while we got to see our advisor once a month, if lucky. But the world is unfair, and econ is a club, so all we can do is b15ch about it on an anonymous forum and continue to be a b15ch.

We got free rider vibes since she could not answer questions in interview. In any case, someone who uses a ten year old headshot for their website has to be shady. Hand waiving can only get you so far. UNC might have had DEI considerations, but this was poor judgement.

I am at a Columbia. I cannot give the specifics without outing myself. There are a lot of vile and personal comments here which are highly inappropriate. The fact of the matter is that VM has been propped up by some members of our department for various reasons. Some wanted a good placement for their student and some, for the department. Her JMP is borrowed from Davis et al which happened during her time at HBS, which again was discriminatory against other candidates. I remember when she presented her JMP last year and it was complete garbage. In fact the paper wasn’t even ready until October. There were mistakes which were corrected, ideas which were given and her JMP improved (by colleagues.) I’m sure any other candidate had they received that kind of support, favors and image management would have been an even bigger star. I can’t speak much about her co-authored papers, but having interacted with her, I know she cannot write computer programs, solve models or come up with them. On paper, she’s an excellent candidate but so are many others and deep down she’s full of bs, only polished and very carefully and presented.
Wow are you a tenured prof?
