Everyone knows American stadiums cost 100 billion dollars, most of which is covered by taxpayers at the local, state, and federal levels. Almost all of them were built in the second half of the twentieth century or later.
But Anfield, Old Trafford, Goodison Park, Celtic Park, etc., were built pre-World War I. My guess is that the appetite for taxpayer funded sports buildings was much lower then. And indeed, the Wikipedia pages for these stadiums does not mention any government funding.
But I was wondering if someone here knew the history of funding “footy” stadiums in the UK off-hand and was willing to share.
