   I thought doing a phd was a good idea. Everyone told me that there would be lots of AP jobs available as the baby boomers retired. |plus they threw tons of money at me to do my phd at a lrm dept.

   First time on the job market was the worst year ever because of the financial crisis. Now this year, now that I have publications, there are tons of jobs, but I am getting no calls. Looks like I am doomed to corporate monotony where I get 2 weeks vacation, and only make 80K a year, and commute 3 hours a day in an expensive city.

    I'm in a similar situation to you. I have a theory that if the demand side sees that you're corporately employed - it's a strike against you - in that you already have a job. Can anyone from the demand side confirm this?

    Yes, even at LRM departments we get so many applications that we would weed out the corporate applicants.

    Problem is that if you don't get an academic job the first time around and get a post-Doc or something, then some of us will judge you to be a lemon. Which you can obviously prove wrong if you get lots of VERY good publications during your time outside academia.

    I'm in a similar situation to you. I have a theory that if the demand side sees that you're corporately employed - it's a strike against you - in that you already have a job. Can anyone from the demand side confirm this?

    Easier said than done in corporate land. With only two weeks of vacation and your entire day tied to a desk, there's little time to write papers. Plus you can't waste that precious vacation time on conferences. I've adjuncted at night and gotten great reviews from students and faculty but that doesn't seem to count for anything.

    Lay off the OP. There isn't *one person* who entered a PhD program in any field who was either realistic about the job market even in a good year or didn't have above average expectations of their performance in it. It's the lousy combination of human psychology and misinformation.

    I implied that you have to be very careful about which career direction you want to take after your PhD...that will determine the rest of your career. So if you know 100% that you want to become a prof one day, then my suggestion is to take any job that has anything to do with academia. Regardless of location, pay, etc.

    Did you apply absolutely everywhere? That's the question you have to ask yourself. Look at recent hires in LRM schools in the US, UK, Austrlia, China for g*s sake and if you can claim you are better than them, then you have a chance of an academic job.

    My advisor from my phd (who is one of my references) is surprised as well at my lack of calls. When I talked to him he actually sounded really mad.
