What about Georgetown PhD?

I’ve been to DC many times, but even if we adjust for that I don’t think I can live with $14,000 per year (flat 14% tax)
UCSB $21,000 but TA for all 5 years
Rochester but only $16,000
PSU but only $16,000
WUSTL waitlist
I come from a relatively poor background so money is indeed an issue here :/Ever been to DC? it's very expensive

I’m afraid I can’t live in such places. I am honestly afraid of going there. I feel like these places are not suitable for human beings. I know they rank higher and their programs are better, but HOW can I do that to myself and spend my early 30s in the middle of nowhere? :’(
go to Penn State or Rochester.

IF you haven't been to Rochester before, it isn't that bad. You can live well on not very much money. Don't listen to all of the virgins here who bitch about it, despite never having visited. (I am not a current or former Rochester PhD.)
It isn't as cool a town as DC by far, but you're going to be spending all of your time for the next five to six years working if you plan to do this right. You really don't need to worry that much about amenities; you won't/shouldn't have time.
Rochester is the better program.

I understand what you’re saying and thank you about it.
You obviously know more than I do and I really appreciate your comments. But I can stop thinking about Life, real Life. I will be studying/working 10-12h per day no matter where I go to — and then what? What about having a quality life like many 30yo do? What the hell am I going to do at Rochester? I won’t even be able to travel cause I’ll be broke. I know Rochester has the best program but I can’t allow my life to slip away from my own hands. At least in DC or Santa Barbara I can still do fun and actually entertaining things for a few hours per week. I feel so lost right now...IF you haven't been to Rochester before, it isn't that bad. I got admitted there. I decided to go to a public ivy MRM in the 20's with a top ranked bschool. GTown is an okay school. I would ignore the rankings your looking at. Its more known for its undergrad and its history. even though its an LRM, it does have a name. so its not all bad! the faculty there I am sure are good.
I would go with other options if you have them otherwise you really have no choice. in phd admissions most of us are choosers not pickers despite how much if everyone trys to act like they were offered hrm spots.
Gtown is trying to establish themselves in finance and do have connections to . so I would focus on finance topics and use those connections.
I feel for you though if that's your only option. make the best of it.

just saw your posts below.
I would go to GTown if WUSTL doesn't pull through.
No offence to Rochester but it has no name. Gtown at least does. You want to go to a school with a historic/established name.
Penn State is not better choice than Gtown no matter how high ranked it is. Penn State has no established recognizable name.
The only two schools I would consider on your list are 1) WUSTL and 2) Gtown.

Thanks a lot for your insights. Just to be clear, I’m interested in academia. Everyone tells me that Rochester and Penn State are the best by far etc. I’m asking myself: if GTown is so bad how can they have hrm like Akerlof, Huggett, Evans, Ravallion, Cumby, Canzoneri, Diba, Rust, Bouton and others?
