What caused it?
What caused the downfall of Oxford?
-
Oxford insider here. A few problems:
1. Inability to remain competitive in retaining top talent. Many of the best professors, such as Bob Allen, James Fenske, and Peyton Young, fled to other schools.
2. Oxford is a nice town, but it's helluva expensive.
3. Bad funding for DPhil (doctoral) students means a lot of poor graduate student talent.
4. Bad Job Market training for DPhil students.
5. Administration is lousy and slow.

5. Administration is lousy and slow.6. job offers are totally uncompetitive on pay, teaching, service, and research axes. You'd have to be desperate or REALLY love Oxford to choose it over its supposed peers in the states.
