   Being serious for a moment, to defend red terrorists in 2014 is absolutely unacceptable. This case has very little to do with Banda della Magliana, at least so it seems. NAR, terza posizione, etc as well as BR and the rest are long gone fortunately. Trying to politicize this criminal organization is just dumb. I hope you don't have the disgusting attitude of some compagni of which Italy is still full (for example: vauro against storace)

   Moreover, claiming that this group has nothing to do with the right is childish. They have been called “fasciomafiosi” by Abbate for this very reason: they operated inside the extreme right movements as they always have done in Rome. La Banda had a shared armoury inside the ministry of Health and Welfare joint with NARs, Massimo Carminati is still considered a hero inside Casa Pound because he lost an eye while fighting, during the summer Silvio Fanella has been killed by a member of Casa Pound (G.B. Ceniti), Gennaro Mockbel has actively spent money to take out of jail Mambro and Fioravanti…Should we talk about what happens inside AS ROMA and SS LAZIO? Did you know that the chief of AS ROMA hooligans is actually the driver of Michele Senese (another boss of Mafia in Rome)?
   I can keep going and you’ll see behind 90% of crime in Rome you can find a link with neofascism...

   I'm from Rome but I've left when I was 19, never went back for more than vacations so I guess you're right, I'm not an expert of its crime scene.

He was puzzled because the whole media coverage was very bipartisan, in the sense that there was this alleged symmetry between right and the left politicians. This is probably the most ridiculous claim ever made, since all the criminal involved in the scandal have a clear origin from neo-fascist groups like NAR (Nuclei Armati Rivoluzionari), Forza Nuova etc… The people from the left who got caught, weren’t affiliate of the organization but just people who were corrupted by them but for whom we can expect only a “concorso esterno”. You probably are not from Rome or you’ve never been there for a lot. The organization led by Caminati had a clear fascist origin; then we could talk about Fasciani, Senese and Casamonica…But what has no doubt at all is the fact those people, and in general crime organisations in Rome, are really close to the right and in fact they chose their former camerata, Gianni Alemanno, as a Mayor. Then you talk about BR, where did I mention them?And by the way, I don’t get the link between BR and this event…But it seems to be deeply rooted inside this bipartisan desire to bring about the evil of the left when others are talking about the right. Let me be clear, red terrorism was s**t, but red terrorism has 0% to do with what happened in Rome, with Roman crime and with Mafia in general...

Now I'm reading of a neo-fascist/mafia nexus. I assume that these neo-fascists have little/no connection with Fascists under Mussolini?

   Communism wasn't a serious danger in the 30s in Italy, plus Mafia was considered as a movement not accepting the totalitarian powers of the fascist government. But after WWII two things changed: communists started to be the second party in Italy, and neofascists were an extra-parliamentary force. So in their subversive plot they started to ally together with the Mafia and the secret services against communists.
   Notice that many members of the institutional parties with a fascist tradition but inside the Parliament and with no subversive plot were strongly opposed to Mafia, one for all the judge Paolo Borsellino who was a member of the MSI but was killed by the Mafia.
   So the link is really between the subversive nature both the Mafia and extra-parliamentary neofascists used to have .

   you raise a good question: thanks for the interest in our country.

   It is indeed the case that in the early fascist period, the regime did try to modernize the south agrarian structures and get rid of the Mafia. They, like any one ever since, failed. During war, allied forces had to rely on the Mafia to organize the Sicily campaign which helped (some, i guess, would say led) to italian liberation.

   The case discussed in this thread has not much to do with the Mafia intended as sicilian organized crime. Mafia now is used to denote criminal groups.

   But there have been, decades after end of WWII, links between far-right movement, secret services and sicilian Mafia. But these had to do with a completely different issue: make sure communist party did not take power.

   Fascism and espetially neo-fascism is a complicated galaxy. Even Mussolini completely changed ideas and policies during his tenure.

    I've lived some years in the early 80s in Rome near Ponte Melvio while my father was the ambassador at the Vatican . When I was there I remember a girl who was allegedly the Pope's daughter was kidnapped and my father always said they were neofascist terrorists together with the local Mob whose money was sequestered by the Vatican bank. I don't remember the name of the girl , but it was already clear in the 80s that the local Mafia together with extra parliamentary right wing groups controlled the city.

    She probably wasn't the Pope's daughter even though many think she was; someone said she was Marcinkus' daughter. What is sure now is that La Banda Della Magliana was directly involved and that Emanuela Orlandi was kidnapped because the Vatican had something to do with their money

    My father was inside the Vatican affairs and always said she was the Pope's daughter. He said they first tried to blackmail him was some pictures but he didn't give them back their money, and that's why they had to kidnap her.
    I've found many things my father used to say in this thread: for instance he always claimed Rome was held in hostage by the Local Mob, by the secret services and black groups. I've never been there since the early 90s but apparently not much have changed.
