Just chat about sports if male. If female I guess you'll have to ask substantial questions about her research.
If he is a beta, then yes you should talk about sports. Nothing more sad and pathetic than worshipping a group of men playing a sport that you could play yourself

if other people in your department like him enough to invite him over you'd better revise your act...you don't need to be super friendly but don't act stupid. He might become your colleague whether you like it or not and it's better to have an indifferent colleague rather than have an enemy. Just my 2c!

I would add to this. Even if he doesn't become your colleague you still don't want enemies. You're probably also at the start of your career or you wouldn't ask questions like this otherwise. You don't need any sort of resentment from anybody no matter how small you might think that somebody is.
