   The real stars were dev and trained by Udry and Rosenzweig (Startz, Morten), but the devo group is now dead. Macro is also dead.

   There was a brief, shining moment a decade ago when it seemed like macro at Yale placed the best of anywhere - but in retrospect this was just Berger and Vavra, and Eduardo Engel seems like the single most important figure there.
   Recently, in macro excluding more spatial/trade people, I guess they had Hubmer and that was basically it?

   Werquin also, but maybe more of a tax guy.

   Being woke repels good students. People pretend to understand the nonsense with smile, but people who can actually think try to avoid that environment as much as possible. It’s too easy a couple of bad people ruins the whole department, while constructing a functional department could take a decade.

   The theory group is amazing, yes, but with one exception the theorists do not talk to applied students. So a student willing to go into a field in which there are no jobs will get a lot of attention.

    Yale's labor people do very complicated structural model which is becoming quickly outdated.

    This is incorrect. Yale's few successful grads the past few years have actually gone this route -- e.g. Eckert, Walsh, Esposito, Ganapati (advised by structural guys like Arkolakis, Peters, Kortum etc.).

    Who downvoted this? This is factually correct.

    when I did my PhD there (early 2000-teens) I really felt like most faculty were generous and supportive. From what I hear now a different situation. It might just be that Yale has converged to being more like other top departments.

    I know this is a shot at Yale but Davila is doing well and with Simsek moving over to SOM I wouldn’t be surprised if the placements there improve

    It's a bit of a mystery. This is certainly correlational but I do wonder if Yale's poor junior hiring the past few years has anything to do with it.

    I guess a potential mechanism is that a healthy mix of seniors and juniors is optimal for phd training. Juniors are closer to the frontier and will maybe help with the nitty gritty stuff

    Recent grad student. What I saw was that the seniors who were most serious about graduate advising have either left or been marginalized.

    Also: I have the same question about RP

    Yale definitely has converged to being like other top departments. As has been pointed out, poor junior hiring is one reason. Another is being exceptionally weak in macro, where traditionally they had great success in placements with Engel’s students. And then if current seniors are not as dedicated to advising as those before, it explains a lot.
