Econ profs here, for god's sake, will never be leaving for the same reasons as Fina profs. This school is like Heaven for them. Pathetic econ people.
What's going on with HKUST
-
Finance profs left or are about to leave for various reasons, almost none of which is being unable to get tenure here. Why pathetic? Econ profs' only reason of leaving is, however, being unable to get tenure. Because, seriously, it is too hard for them to get a good job anywhere these days.
Don't get your point. Why pathetic? Why are finance ppl leaving?

I get it, you make your point. HKUST Econ rank is way below Finance rank, especially true for young faculties. After all, Fin department offers a salary of almost 180 HK dollars per month for AP while the salary of Econ department is 70K per month
No relation. Just made a point that they are not free to leave for personal reasons.
What's the relation between being unable to get tenure and being hard to get a good job elsewhere?

HK is also more expensive than most cities in US as well, besides NY, SF, etc.
After all, Fin department offers a salary of almost 180 HK dollars per month for AP while the salary of Econ department is 70K per month
Are you serious? That's 280K USD / year for Fin faculty, much higher than the typical 220 + 2/9 in the US.
-
not true. hkust finance pays lowest among top 3 in hk and cuhk offers 120 k per month for ap this year.

120k per month is nearly us$ 180k per year. So low
Taxes are 15% (and no sales or VAT) which helps.
I know someone moving to HK who got their offer reduced on the ground that they would only match his "after-tax" salary.
Of course, that's not how it'll work when you leave ...
