   China is projected to overtake the US as the world's largest economy in 2032. If and when it happens, it will be a seminal moment in the economic history of the world. India had the world's largest economy in the 1700's, the UK was the dominant economy until 1913 when the US overtook it to become the world's largest economy.
   How will Americans react to this moment? The US is officially considered as the most dominant, powerful and preeminent nation today based upon its apex position as the world's largest economy.
   Will losing the world's largest economy title result in a lack of confidence amongst Americans? Do they fear losing the elite status that the US enjoys around the world?

   There’s a billion more people in China. It’s about time they have the worlds largest economy.

   That China will soon be the world's largest economy is a universally accepted thing. However, how will Americans react to being considered the second-best in the world behind China?

   I'm sure the average American will be very sad that four Chinese are finally capable of producing as much as he is. Will definitely make him feel "second-best".

   Nothing will change. Chinese will become fat from an american diet and the richest chinese will buy properties in the bay area.

   For all the wealth China has accumulated over the past few decades, the number of over-weight Chinese is proportionately lesser than that of many western nations.

   ok but their consumption tastes are changing and aligning to the west (see for example the dairy sector that was virtual non-existent until a few years ago)

   It’s a shame that China has politically gone backwards the last decade. If they continued reform to open their markets and reduce political persecution a little more I could root for them. Ten years ago, when I expected China to continue to improve, I wouldn’t have expected to have said this, but I’m so burnt out by the US and EU’s leadership at this point that my concern is China’s rise more than the West’s fall.

    And the relative populations of China and the US will narrow through the 21st century. Quite conceivable the US would later retake the lead, if Chinese gdp per capita growth stalls (which it likely will).
