This question poses a conundrum for Christians who like to use the word "gnosticism" as a term of abuse against trans people. If God is really male, then being male need not have anything to do with one's body, since God has none. If God is merely metaphorically male, then he really has no gender and might be just as aptly referred to as a "them" or an "it," and possibly as "her" if feminine qualities can be found in God. If God is really but equivocally male, meaning that the maleness of God and the maleness of a man are two things that are so different they only have a name in common, then one might wonder why God is called male to begin with.
