Can’t go wrong with the T480s
Which laptop would you go for?

ThinkPad following is the opposite of a cult. They're more like It's genuinely driven by the product. It's not a 'sexy' product - more like Dieter Rams sort of design. They are very tough, with outstanding keyboards, plenty of ports, best-in-class specs (right down to what model of RAM they give you), and have great security options in the BIOS, all in a pretty lean and minimalist form factor. Heck, the T470s was lighter than the MBP!

And to clarify, this is because I like to use mine on the plane, like to be able to quickly whisk it out when sitting in a cafe or sitting at the airport gate, to be able to carry it around comfortably at the office, to have it in a light backpack without weighing me down, to be able to lift it comfortably with one hand.
How about the Thinkpad X1 Extreme? Too big for working in planes etc?
Depends on use case. I could never go to a 15-inch laptop now. Even the almost bezel-free XPS 15 is much, much chunkier than my 14-inch T-series.

Honestly Macbooks were the best laptop by far 5-6 years ago, and it was ridiculous to buy anything else unless you were poor.
Apple totally screwed them up with the dumb keyboard/etc issues, but the new 16 inch Macbook has fixed all these issues and its back to being the best laptop, I dont know why you would consider buying anything else unless portability was your main issue.
