I hear his contract with Utah pays him the median wage. He's so principled, he doesn't even want to be in the same part of the wage distribution as the rich capitalists.
Who is Marshall Steinbaum?

My recollection of Marshall from grad school was that he was quiet and non-confrontational in both classes and social settings and certainly not a firebrand advocate of any sort, afaict. Turns out later he described the experience as "scarring" (in particular the never-shy-to-debate Kevin Murphy's classes). Was a bit surprised in the past year or three when he turned up as a confrontational online econoperson.

I felt like I knew this before I even heard it. His online speech is like a mask. I have always suspected he was probably shy irl.

Why does he wage his war on twitter and can't f**king write a sensible paper?
All the old and some new folks in Utah Econ are, needless to say, pathologically retarted people. And still, the state is spending money on them. There should be a state wide agenda/movement to unfund these crooks.

I follow Marshall because his tweets are useful when I'm trying to convince my left-leaning friends what the real hateful, bitter face of their party looks like. Before his twitter wipe, Marshall regularly actively wished death on various groups he didn't like. And followed such tweets up with "This is a threat." Really disgusting stuff.

Tweet from @Econ_Marshall: People have been calling me inflammatory and rude ever since 2008-2009, when I predicted that austerity in response to financial crisis would cause the rise of neo-fascism.
Then he should write a paper showing this.
I think it's more central bank screwups plus structural problems leading to low growth and the rise of neo-socialism.

And then claimed Will Wilkinson was trying to get him fired when it was blatantly obvious he was just a massive embarrassment to Roosevelt

This. I remember him as an opinionated guy with interesting views, but he was not confrontational or anything close to that (he wasn't in your face, he earnestly tried to persuade you to his views). By the way, Chicago tends to attract many opinionated students (surprise surprise!), and each cohort has at least one very opinionated student who also happens to be a jackass. In his cohort, someone else filled that role, not Marshall.
However, he truly resented most of his classes, and the fact that he had to repeat his first year probably didn't help either and may have perhaps turned on a switch inside him. Who knows.

He hasn’t been paid to write research until now. So judge him after a few years. I suspect this move will increase his work on antitrust and monopsony. Why does he wage his war on twitter and can't f**king write a sensible paper?
