   Last Monday we were set to invite four candidates to campus. I sensed no real ordering among the four so my priors were about 1/4 for each of them to get our first offer.

   Our College employs a parasite who is charged with ensuring that all job searches make diversity a higher priority than finding the best person. She had to approve our flyout list. Last Wednesday, we hear that we cannot make our invitations because they lack diversity. This is news to me, the list includes one woman, one Korean, and one Indian-American. But she tells us that the latter two don’t count’’ for diversity.

   Apparently as punishment, we are now allowed only three flyouts. And we had to add one person that we are not really interested in because his kind of diversity does apparently count.

   So two of you, who would have had a real chance at our position, didn’t get a flyout. Despite this crap, we are a pretty good place. Sorry.

   We have to deal with diversity committees as well. They are a pain in the arse, but in my experience they can be reasoned with. What seems work, at least for us, is to establish a relationship well in advance of the job market. Ask them for guidelines, but at the same time persuade the of your department's overall commitment to diversity, and make sure they understand that the econ job market isn't the same as that in English or anthropology. When the time comes for them to approve your flyouts, they will be much less likely to give you a hard time.

   The whole "diversity" thing is bulls**t. I am just about the most diverse person on the planet, but as a white male my diversity counts for nothing; indeed, I am punished for being nondiverse. I grew up literally dirt-poor and it's a miracle that I am alive given what I had to survive. Of course, partially-minority people born into rich families who never spent a minute in public schools, much less the one where I saw another student stabbed to death before my very eyes, count as diverse.

   We were told that this constraint was only binding on departments where there is an existing lack of diversity. We are actually better than the average econ department in terms of diversity. So we didn't worry about this.

   But you are obviously correct.

    First, I am not going to name. I have to work here.

    Second, here is the exact text, with just one name changed,of the last email from the diversity pain in the ass:

    "I just want to follow up on our earlier conversation. My goal here is not to create trouble for you guys. And I am not trying to interfere in your affairs.

    As you know, President Cortaw has initiated DIVERSITY 2015, an important campus-wide initiative aimed at inclusion. My role is just to align your search with this important goal. But the problem with your invitation list goes beyond this. Unfortunately, I discovered that all four of your candidates earned a B+ in real analysis."
