Is it true that accounting academia is this corrupt? I lost all my respect for people publishing in JAE and JAR.
Why are accounting folks so terrible?
-
Accounting attracts those whose life’s ambition is to become an accountant.
Therefore, it should come as no surprise that accounting has one of the lowest average IQs of any academic discipline, or that accountants are incapable of holding civil, productive conversations with one another.
-
I always find it amusing how fields like accounting, law, police and politics have some of the worst and most corrupt sc/ um ba gs. It's like the most unethical people naturally gravitate towards fields that are supposed to make things "legal" or "transparent" or "ethical".
-
JAE/JAR > JFE/RFS. sorry finbros
Finance academics are hacks. They research executive d!ck size and risk aversion. Research is pointless and means absolutely nothing. The greatest fraud is delivering an undergrad degree with 10 discounted cash flow classes that are all the same. I guess 30 enter and 2 become investment bankers. The other 28 go to Edward Jones.

Should I pursue the PhD in Accounting?
To answer this question, you must consider several factors and I will bring here what I know from my own experience.
1. Do you want to get locked in one profession or do you want to consider moving? NO, if you want to move. Getting locked in one profession makes you totally dependent on that.
2. How much are you going to invest in the accounting Ph.D.? A LOT. You will quit your job if you have one or you will not work for 5 years, That’s a lot of financial loss.
3. Will you get a job, and what a job? You might or not might get a job. If you are after research, you will need to get admission to a top school (sorry) to get a research job. Otherwise, don’t even think about enrolling in an MR school because even if you work hard, you will not get e decent job.
4. Is there a shortage in accounting academia? NO, there is not. That was a lie, bad propaganda, now there are many accounting PhDs without a job.
5. How is it like to be in a Ph.D. program? Difficult and you must supply the faculty of your school, especially the advisor and the dept. chair with your ideas so that they can publish and get paid the summer support.
6. Let’s say I have an idea that will eventually get published. Are there any chances I land a job in a research school? NO, that’s not possible. Those jobs go to Top school JMCs. You will not get any reward for your hard work. Your coauthors yes.
7. How is the pay while in the program? Not much, many need extra money from their families or need to work part-time. International students pay extra tax.
8. How would you describe the rookiecamp? What is that? The idea is to get together JMCs with the school that is hiring. It is dead now and not worth it. It doesn’t work anymore and if you are not from a top school, you will not get interviews so if you don’t want to feel like garbage don’t go there.
9. Some people say there is corruption in admission, placements, and publication. Is that true? It is much more than that. It’s a network of people enslaving other people.
10. So, in poor words, do you recommend the accounting Ph.D.? As I said this is not what I wanted. I got locked in some time, but now after ten years I will retire, and I do not recommend to anyone the accounting academia. -
Do Econ then and leave us the f@ck alone.

Why are accounting academics so terrible to each other? Seriously, skim this thread and you'll get introduced to the type of acc academics frequenting EJMR. Compare to the marketing job market thread for comparison.
Why are they so terrible to each other? They are among the highest paid at business schools. From what I understand it's pretty easy to land a job in academia with even a low ranked phd. Even at teaching schools they get paid what other disciplines get at better research schools.
Why so much hate? A unique form of EJMR self selection? I seriously don't get it.Because Econ faculties hate teaching and dislike AACSB accreditation process
So it's our revenge to make their lives miserable
